In 1747 Johann Sebastian Bach published a set of pieces under the title "Musikalisches Opfer" (Musical Offering) as a reply to a challenge by King Frederick II to compose a complicated polyphonic work using a short musical fragment proposed by the King himself. The pieces were based around this fragment and were indeed not easy; they also contained a number of musical puzzles for the performers to solve.
The paintings in my exhibition Musical Offerings are not complicated like Bach's offerings, but they do contain puzzles of a sort, and are all unique "musical offerings" – they were created using beautiful (predominantly classical) compositions. The paintings were all inspired by the power of Love and Wisdom in Nature and many of them are filled with happy, amusing creatures and transparent beings – all of a good nature – through which I wish to uplift people. Like Bach's musical offerings, I would also like my viewers to "solve" the puzzles of these offerings for themselves, finding their hidden metaphysical meanings intertwined with the music.
The compositions used in this collection of paintings include the chamber music of Max Reger, works for solo cello by the postmodern composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg as well as piano music by Edvard Grieg. The works in this collection also represent some of my earliest attempts to create paintings using music.
